The First Epistle to the Corinthians (NIGTC) - review
The First Epistle to the Corinthians (NIGTC) by Anthony C. Thiselton is a robust commentary on 1 Corinthians.
Pros:
* Deals exhaustively with issues
* Well-outlined
* Good connections intracanonically
* Good background on the world of Paul and Corinth
* Great help with the Greek text
Cons:
* Thick reading with a bunch of information that isn't very helpful for the end message
* Not strong in practical application, but issues are covered in such a way that such implications are not difficult to bring out
This is a top commentary on this book. I coupled this commentary with some shorter expositions from DA Carson: Cross and Christian Ministry and Showing the Spirit. I also used some resources from Desiring God, Commentary of the Use of the OT in the NT, the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, and Al Lewis' messages and Q&A on various topics.

Hey Todd, We've been working through Thistleton's commentary in our Pastors' reading group (with Randy A., John M., Jeff W., Steve S., and a few others) We have all come to much the same conclusions as you have. We just got through chap. 11. What was your impression of AT's conclusions on head coverings?
This section (1 Cor 11:2-16) is the epitome of 'thick reading' and a struggle to get practical application. There are 6! individual articles surrounding these passages and while it is filled with somewhat interesting details, recommended decisions get a bit lost in all of that. I liked his thoughts on gender distinctiveness and aligned with kephale meaning 'head' not 'source.' His stuff was helpful in evaluating positions, but not really in coming to a hard conclusion. Plus, there is no (that I can remember) real help in answering what are we to do today.
Knowing you guys were walking though this would have been very helpful to that message. Que sera, sera.
